Building The Terrace 2012 - 2013
125 Spectator Stand
In mid 2012 a decision was taken by the club executive to progress with the building of a spectator stand This decision was driven by two factors - in this day and age people, save for the few hardy souls, were less inclined to stand out in the wind and rain to support our teams and therefore we needed to move with the times and provide better facilities. Secondly we wanted a heritage project that we could identify with an important year in our history 2013 – the 125th anniversary of the club’s foundation.
The Development & Infrastructure sub committee made up of Colin Rooney, Gareth Keenan, Seamus McMahon, Packie McCabe and Phelim Connolly were charged with bringing this initiative to fruition. After site visits to sports grounds in Derry, Tyrone and Fermanagh we landed on a blueprint of what we wanted. An Architect, and a Structural Engineer were appointed in turn and when plans were finalised we submitted same for the necessary approvals. Due process takes time and it was in the early Spring 2013 before we were ready to put the job out to tender. Kevin Rooney & Damien Creighan secured the groundworks contract, Steel Solutions the steel work, Macrete manufactured the terrace units and HowFar Ltd took care of the cladding. Sean Beggan completed the face block work while Anthony Jordan looked after the concrete finishing. We were very fortunate that the job was project managed very efficiently and to a tight time frame by both Gareth and Colin who used their professional skills to great effect. Numerous club volunteers were also involved, male and female, young and old, in putting the finishing touches to the seat erection and general tidy up. Our contractors in turn were very accommodating and a pleasure to work with.
The Spectator stand was 12 months in the planning but was built in 12 weeks and it now sits as a permanent reminder of our anniversary year. The financial input of so many good people who are part of Cairde Seamróga Ros Liath was critical to the success of this project, as without their continued commitment our plans could not have been brought to fruition.
The stand, complete with it’s 212 seats, was officially opened on Sunday August 25th 2013 by Club Presidents Tommy Callaghan, Hugh Pat Clerkin, Owen Callaghan and Packie McCabe.
